International
Youth and Eco-Travel Mart 2003
The
event was co-organized by the
Tourism Authority of Thailand and Kasetsart
University during April 30-May 2, Bangkok, Thailand.
The theme was "The Path towards Sustainability of
Thai Ecotourism”. Thailand has spent its effort on promoting
and developing ecotourism for years with some successes
and challenges. One of those challenges is how to get
all stakeholders to work together to achieve the ecotourism
goals as already set in the national policy.
The workshop intended to bring ecotourism stakeholders
to the workshop to discuss their role and commitment in
order to form individual stakeholder codes of conduct
towards an eventual national ecotourism certification
program. |

Ecotourism
Zoning Project
It
is an on-going project being carried out by Faculty
of Forestry, Kasetsart
University funded by TAT.
The project focuses on classifying ecotourism zones based
on Recreation Opportunity Spectrum concept (ROS). This
concept emphasizes the experiences visitors should receive
at a particular setting. Lands are classified according
to their potential to provide different ecotourism opportunities
using GIS technique. Besides, social and management conditions
are analyzed to refine the ecotourism zoning. The outputs
of this project are (1) the ecotourism zones map ranging
from Primitive, Semi-primitive - non motorized, Semi-primitive
- motorized, and Roaded natural/modified zones, (2) an
ecotourism zoning manual, and (3) Guidelines of ecotourism
management in each zone. These outputs will help significantly
on decision making process for development of ecotourism
products and its niched market. The project area covers
Mae Rim – Mae Sa – Samuang tourism route in Chiangmai
province. |

Assessment
of Ecotourism Site Potentials
The project was carried
out by Walailak
University and funded by TAT
in 2002. Its objective are to assess the potentiality
of ecotourism sites in Thailand in terms of its resource
attraction and other four aspects of management capabilities
in response to ecotourism principles: facility and
services, interpretation and awareness building, environmental
and socio-economic impact control, and local community
involvement and benefit distribution. Assessment factors
and their criteria were identified and weighting score
method was employed in ecotourism site potential level
determination (Walailak
University, 2002). The output of this project
is worthwhile as basis for management guidelines of
a specific ecotourism site
